XP installation fails at Device Installation

My system gets through the first three segments of the XP
upgrade, and 3/4 of way through the device installation
everything stops and my screen comes up with all kinds of
colored stripes.

The only way I can escape is to turn the system off and
catch the Cancel XP upgrade upon reboot.

I didn't get the impression from the compatability check
that there would be a problem other than some additional
files perhaps being needed for my current printer.

Any suggestions?
