Default XP Pro cannot install a shared printer on a Vista Ultimate PC

I have found hundreds of threads on not being able to install a printer on an
XP to a Vista machine, but not one about my problem.
Home pear to pear workgroup network. 1 Vista Ultimate 64 bit, 2 XP Pro's, 2
XP Home. Lexmark Z600 printer hung off of the Vista PC. Working fine.
Trying to use this Lexmark printer as the main printer for one of the XP
Home PC's. From the XP Home PC can see the Vista share printer. When
installing, told that this is not the correct print driver & does not install.
Solution #1 - Tried installing the standard XP 32 bit driver for this
printer on the Vista PC so that the XP machine can download that driver
during shared install. Vista says this tyep driver is not correct and will
not allow me to install it for network sharing.
Solution #2 - Tried manually installing the printer on the target XP Home PC
by using "Add Hardware". INstalled the driver fine but since the wizard did
not recognize the printer as being attached, could not figure out how to
actually connect the Vista shared printer with this instance of the printer
install?
Need help understanding how to acomplish this. Thanks!

By the Way, the Vista 64 bit machine is a brand new built PC and the OS so
far is wonderful and fast. 2 or 3 of my really old pieces of
hardware/software would not work on the 64 bit, but I anticipated that before
I made the change. Very fast with PHotoshop!!!

On the XP computer that has the driver installed create a new port called
\\VistaComputerName\PrinetrShareName. This may not work. Some USB printers
don't like being shared. Can you share the printer successfully from an XP
computer?

I will try this right now. Yes, this same printer was connected to an XP Pro
machine and shared to this same XP Home PC before I installed the new Vista
machine.

I will try this right now. Yes this same printer was shared across the
network from my old XP Pro PC to this same XP Home PC and am trying to share
to now. Thanks!

Try to connect the printer to XP home and install the printer locally. Test
it. Then move the printer back to the Vista and remap to the network printer
on XP Home. Please post back with the result.

Default Re: XP Pro cannot install a shared printer on a Vista Ultimate PC

That did not work. I had deleted the printer instance I had created before,
so I created another one manually using "Add Hardware". When I got to the
part about the port, I created a new one as you had indicated, then completed
the wizard.
That printer however does not show up in the printers list. I rebooted the
computer and it is still not there. Tried to recreate the port and XP is
saying that the port I am trying to create already exists. Also tried to
create a printer a third time. At the point of what port to use, the new
port I had created was there so I used that one to create the printer. Again
it does not show up in the printers list.

Any othe ideas???

Thanks Robert! Your idea worked!

Connected & installed the printer locally on the XP Home machine.
Disconnected from XP machines and reconnected to the Vista 64 bit PC.
Changed the port to a local port pointing to the shared Vista printer and it
worked fine from the XP machine.

Delete the shared printer ports that point to the Vista computer. Hook up
the printer to an XP computer and share it. Install the shared printer. Hook
the printer back up to the Vista computer and share it. Create a new port
pointing to the share on the Vista computer. If this doesn't work then it
looks like the Lexmark driver is not compatible with sharing from Vista to
XP. FWIW this is relatively common with USB printers and Lexmark in
particular. They sometimes have the same problem when trying to share from
XP to win9x or win2k.
