XP Professional and Brother 1440 Printer

I loaded the Brother 1440 Printer driver as suggested by Microsoft. The printer works fine, but once the printer is used, the screen flickers every 5 seconds or so. This happened immediately after the printer driver was installed, and hasn't stopped. It's quite annoying. Any suggestions for a remedy? Thanks
