xp sound problems

First p3 450, PC chips m726mrt mother board with soundpro
inbuilt chip(now disabled in bios) new cmedia 8738 4
channel card. Was running w98 os now xp sp1. System hangs
when sound played at start-up. Have to disable in device
man. to use the thing. Have tried everything I know but
still freezes. Suggestions please.
