Search the web for 'PatchXP' or PatchXP-SP1. Download
and install per directions. Be careful and make sure you
get the SP1 verison if you're running SP1. This DLL
patch is free and will allow use of non Microsoft visual
styles without having to load additional software like
ThemeXP or WindowBlinds. The result is the use of visual
styles that take no more system resources than the
default MS visual style.

Sites like themexp.org and neowin.net have tons of free
themes and visual styles.

I've found downloading to a separate 'themes' directory
works well just to collect the ZIP files.

Right-click on the ZIP and 'extract' to
\windows\resources\themes\ directory. Usually, a new
subdirectory containing all of the styles' needed files
is created.

Navigate into \windows\resources\themes\<style
directory>\ and double-click on the .msstyle file.

Windows will automatically present Display Properties
with the new visual style already selected.

Some styles let you change colors. You can do this by
clicking on the Appearance tab when working with Display
Properties.

Remember to hit 'Save As' to save your theme once you
have icons, sounds, etc. set the way you want.

Default XP Themes

I have Windows XP Professional and noticed that I do not
have the neat themes that a friend of mine does in Windows
XP Home. For Instance a sports theme which has the sound
effects and the icons that go with it. Haunted House is
another. How can I download these themes in my edition?
There is a whole list of them.

Hi Rose,

Were they added independently or perhaps they have XP Plus! installed?

Default XP Themes

It appears that the standard windows XP themes have been
deleted or lost. Also, after choosing my settings, when
trying to save, it will not work.

This all started when, after about 10 minutes in windows,
my XP STYLED theme would change to my previous 98 STYLED
theme. (possibly because of a file and migration setting
from a 98 machine.)

Can I download new themes? Where should I put them?

XP Themes are located in C:\WINDOWS\resources\themes

Default XP themes

I have been developing themes for windows XP for the last
several months, but one thing i cant seem to customize is
the tooltips on the Start Menu... for example: the idiot
friendly tooltip that comes after moving the mouse over
log-off "Provides options for closing your programs and
logging off...." does anyone know howto disable the
tooltips within the start menu? any input would be very
appretiated!!

The only tooltips that can be removed are included within this edit:

Disable Balloon Tips or Disable All (Row 11)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Disable All includes: Balloon Tips, Folder Contents Info Tips, Explorer
Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification Area.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
