How to clean your BlackBerry’s Trackball

Published in Blackberry by Aditi Tuteja

A Friend of mine had a problem with his Blackberry Pearl today, the trackball just didnt turn left making it non browsable, and the phone was pretty much unusable without that feature!

So, I ended up doing some googling and used some hit & trail methods that I read, I finally realized that something was causing the sensor not to respond to the left side, and by removing the pearl’s cover I would get access to its sensor and clean it. Most BlackBerry devices that carry a trackball around like BlackBerry Pearl, Curve, 8800, 8820 and 8830.

The silver ring that covers the trackball can easily be removed if you use a small screwdriver ( I have longer nails and I just used that) to lift it at the outer side of the ring.

All parts were very fragile and you have to be careful with them. When the silver plastic ring is removed I could see the inner trackball component which can be removed completely. Before doing this I removed the silver metal ring that holds the trackball component in place.

For every direction the ball can roll in, it has sensor wheels. Those wheels were carrying some dust I used a Qtip to clean them. Once this is done put everything back together to the place the pieces came from and secure the trackball with the silver plastic ring. The BlackBerry’s trackball was working after this.
