How to Convert FAT to NTFS File System

Published in Howto, Windows by Himanshu Khagta

Hello guys, this is my first contribution on realgeek.com, recently I converted FAT to NTFS, and this is how I did it. I thought it would be good to share with you all. I would recommended you to backup your important files to an external hard drive or another location.

This process carries high assurance that this would work for you, as it did for me, but it’s always a good precaution. Please know that this process can not be Reversed.

What’s NTFS? NTFS, short for NT File System, is the most secure and robust file system for Windows NT, 2000, and XP. It provides security by supporting access control and ownership privileges, meaning you can set permission for groups or individual users to access certain files.

And if you really need the conversion, make sure to Verify that the file system is really FAT32

You can easily do this by click on My Computer. Single left click on your hard drive icon. In a window to the left, it will give you details on the drive, showing what the file system is, or you can click on hard drive icon and select Properties.

Make sure to note down of all the drive letters that you may require to convert.

Now to open the command console, click on the Start button, then select the “Run” command. This will open a small box with a text field. In this field, type ‘cmd‘ without the quotes and press enter.

How to Convert Fat to NTFS?

  1. Visit Start > Run > type cmd and then click OK.
  2. At command prompt type:

CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS

eg: If you wanna convert C: Drive to NTFS then Type

convert c: /fs:ntfs

Make sure you type in the command exactly as it’s shown, replace ‘C:’ with the drive letter you need to convert. You will get prompt that the drive needs to be dismounted in order to the conversion and will be forced to choose Y or N.
When this prompt appears, type Y and hit enter.

In case your operating system is on the drive you want to convert, the program will ask whether you would like to schedule the conversion for when the system is restarting. If that is applicable to you then go for Yes.

Once the conversion process is complete you can quit command prompt by typing exit and pressing enter.
