Let me be very straightforward about it because I don’t want to put you under any wrong impression. Microsoft will indeed launch an Operating System this week. This Operating System wont be doing the usual stuff, it would rather be an OS for the designers who want to create web based applications which derive the power of cloud computing.
It is being called “Windows Cloud” for now and Steve Ballmer mentioned about this OS in a tech conference held in London. He refused to say anything more on that.
We could only speculate on what it would perform really while one thing is sure that it means support for developers who want to create online apps like Zoho or Google Docs. More and more web applications are now being made where the user merely uses the Web browser to perform tasks, but the actual computing is performed at a distant data center.
Microsoft Cloud could be Microsoft’s answer to Google Chrome considering the focus of Google on making applications which use cloud computing. It is also possible that Microsoft might move its Office productivity suite online but Steve Balmmer denies this possibility. We will have to wait for few weeks till this story unfurls.
