With Nokia finally announcing the Nokia N96, it’s time to take a look at what new features they’ve added since the Nokia N95. The Nokia N96. As a slicker, stronger update to the already powerful Nokia N95, the new N96 has every feature you could want in a cell phone.
N96 Vs N95 8GB

Nokia N96 has a 5-megapixel camera with a list of special offerings that make it a great phone. It support a Carl Zeiss lens with flash, and a VGA camcorder that plays and records clips at 30 frames per second.
On the whole it’s better than Nokia N95. The Nokia N96 has abundant internal storage of 16GB. It also has a microSD slot that can accommodate cards up to 8GB which will make the total media storage capacity at 24GB. Nokia has claimed on this one that you’ll be able to watch 40 hours of video using the internal storage alone.

Video and Imaging
The Nokia N96 supports common video formats including MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video and includes a high-speed USB 2.0 connection, WLAN and HSDPA support. The Nokia N96 has the video center that allows access to Internet videos and can play back a wide variety of standard file formats, including Flash. Shooting videos is still at VGA (640×480) 30fps, same as the N95, and the camera is also a five megapixel with Carl-Zeiss lens and built-in flash. The N96 also gives access to Live TV, where DVB-H broadcasts are available.
Dimensions
The new Nokia N96 isn’t bigger than Nokia N95, it takes similar space. But it’s slightly bigger and bit heavier. Nokia N96 has a smooth shiny surface, really well implemented slider hinge, big clear screen, fast responses and small details like touch pad navigation or built-in quick stand for watching video, makes using Nokia N96 much more pleasant experience then a year old Nokia N95 in my pocket.
Display
You get a slightly larger display on the Nokia N96, 2.8 inches compared to 2.6″ on the N95, but it’s still a QVGA (240 x 320 pixels same resolution) 16 million colour-capable LCD TFT.
Connectivity
Nokia N96 has a built-in GPS receiver and comes pre-installed with the Nokia Maps. Nokia GPS feature on N96 is one of the most notable advantage of having this phone. It still features the Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, and also has an RSS reader for catching up with website content feeds. The other range of connectivity, including Wi-Fi and USB 2, which is close to the Nokia N95 itself, no advanced enhancements as such.

Nokia N96 S60 Browser
With N96 you get the best of browser. With some of the unique features of S60 browser, you get great browsing experience.
It enables Auto Bookmarks. Page overview feature can let you displays the complete web page on your mobile screen thus simplifying the navigation. You can also keyword find on the entire browser page.
Storage
The N96 comes with a very impressive 16GB of internal storage memory plus a hot swappable microSD memory card slot, which is lot better than the Nokia N95 4GB memory card slot, which makes Nokia N96 a better phone in performance for all multimedia functions.
Will you buy it?
On comparing specifications of Nokia N96 to Nokia N95, we can say that this phone is definitely an upgrade. It holds plenty of improvements. The Nokia N96 has more storage on board, but it also supposed to have bad battery time. Will you get the new Nokia N96? Or if you already own the N95 8GB, will you upgrade to this one?
I’m sure I would. ![]()

I was all set to upgrade to an E71 from my E61i, but after lugging around an extra 5MP digicam on my summer holidays I think I can wean myself off of QWERTY for an N96…

i think i will stick with my n82, a better xenon flash in a candybar form factor with pretty much everything the n96 has except a dvb-h receiver (which they don’t have in my country)and 16gb internal memory (but it has a memory card slot so i can upgrade to 16 or 32 gb when they are released, i currently have 8gb) plus it has a better looking display (same resolution on a smaller screen)and a lens cover for the camera

I have been waiting for the N96 to upgrade my ageing N73 (not wanting to get the now nearly obsolete N95). The overall spec is good, and I have never had a bad Nokia phone yet.

can anyone explain how the N96 can record video at 30fps without the 3D video accelerator? I assumed devices needed that hardware to properly record at that rate. I myself value an extra video processor, and don’t feel its a worthy trade off to gain an extra 8gb, a card slot, and Feature Pack 2. It’s like having an extra computer on board. Had it added xenon flash instead of a video flash, or even a VGA display, it might’ve been more compelling. Price to features, since most FP2 highlights can be installed on FP1 phones, the 8gb is much more attractive, imo.
