Oracle today released version 4.5 of the open source Oracle Berkely database. Oracle Berkeley DB 4.5 will now support multi-version concurrency control, non-stop upgrades for replicated environments and a pre-built replication framework to simplify development of highly available applications.
Oracle Berkeley DB 4.5 is becoming a popular open source database choice for developers who need to embed a fast, reliable, transactional storage engine within their applications.
Oracle’s Berkeley DB is part of the company’s strategy to provide developers with a broad range of embeddable products to meet the diverse needs of the embedded industry. Oracle’s embeddable product line also includes Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, Oracle Database Lite 10g, Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Application Server 10g.
Key enhancements in Oracle Berkeley DB Release 4.5 include:
- Multi-Version Concurrency Control — improves performance of highly concurrent, mixed read/write systems by giving each user their own “snapshot” of the database and managing concurrent changes by many users.
- Non-stop Upgrades — enables a replicated Oracle Berkeley DB system to be upgraded without downtime.
- Replication Framework — provides a pre-built and supported set of functions for quickly building replicated or highly available systems, simplifying and accelerating their development effort.
Oracle Berkeley DB 4.5 is available under a dual licence. A no-cost open source licence permits redistribution if the application using Oracle Berkeley DB is open source. A commercial licence is available for redistribution of proprietary applications. Download here
