Recently Google Mail faced an outage, that lasted for minutes, what if it too longer, what if it never got restored? wierd scary fears cropped my mind. My Gmail accounts mean a lot to me and my work. And so I feel an app like this is useful..GMail Backup gives you an easy way to save a copy of your precious cloud-based inbox on your local system. This app requires IMAP access to GMail, so make sure you’ve enabled it in your preferences.

GMail Backup also has a restore feature which makes it a handy way to migrate from one GMail address to another should you ever need to do that.

One has to preserve battery on mobile devices because they always seem to die out soon, especially when all you did was run few applications, they just die on you when need them most.

Here are some generic tips for Improving Blackberry battery life:

Keeping WiFi enabled does a substantial power drain, so turning it off when it is not required by you saves a lot of power. on the home screen, look for the icon that is the wifi tower which should say “Turn wireless off” (or on, if it is already off) and press the wheel. The Handset ends up draining power, especially when these networks have poor signal.

Some times blackberry would wake you up in the middle of the night only to let you know that you got a spam email.. this sucks! and you have the ability to make your Blackberry automatically turn itself off at a set time each day.

To enable this, press on the Options icon in the home page and click on Auto On/Off. When you click there, you have the option of setting the on and off times and the option to enable or disable the auto on/off feature. Weekdays and weekends can also be set according to your preference. Don’t worry, alarms and reminders will still work even if it is auto off.

In any competition two is better than one and it seems Microsoft is all set to use the same strategy by sticking to Windows 6.5 even after it launches the Windows Mobile 7 somewhere at the end of 2010. According to the Taiwanese trade newspaper Digitimes, Microsoft will be adopting the dual strategy by promoting both the Windows Mobile OS versions to compete in different niches.

Microsoft will supposedly compete with the Android devices with the Windows Mobile 6.5 which is expected to be available on October 1, 2009 while it will be using Windows Mobile 7 to take the iPhone based platforms head-on.

It is further being reported that Microsoft will decrease the price of Windows Mobile 6.5 editions to make it still relevant and attractive to the consumers looking for relatively inexpensive Mobile devices with smartphone capabilities.

It has to be noted that the Mobile phone space is changing rapidly in last few years and Microsoft might miss out on some action by keeping the launch dates way too far. It is quite evident that both Android and iPhone would have progressed much farther with thousands of compatible apps being made for the said smartphone platforms. More and more mobile manufacturers which were earlier using WinMo editions are switching to Android. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft remains relevant in the mobile space. Microsoft has always been a ruthless competition but will it be a good competitor here. Time will tell.

Wikipedia has launched an official iPhone application which is now available for free on the iTunes App Store. The application is pretty simple with no fancy stuff that you might want to ask yourself why in the world you downloaded it when you could have just pointed your Safari browser to the mobile version of wikipedia to get the desired information.

The Wikipedia iPhone doesn’t really offer any compelling features that you users download it over just browsing the mobile version of the website. It is however in a very initial stage and Wikimedia Foundation promises that improvements will be made based on the user feedback and suggestions.

It also stresses that the code of the applications is 100% open source and community built and any geek can tinker with it create a better version of the app. Be my guest.

Palm has launched its Mojo Developer Kit to everyone so that interested developers can create Palm compatible applications. Pal recently launched its smartphone called Palm Pre which received good reviews and somehow also managed to emerge itself as an iPhone killer. The App Catalog is the Palm’s answer to iPhone App Store and it was made public about six weeks back. Surprisingly more than 1.8 million apps have already been downloaded from the Palm App Catalog.

The Palm Catalog has so far very thin options against the huge collection of apps for Apple iPhone but Palm hopes to reach the levels by now releasing the Software Development Kit with the anticipation that it might attract good developers to create quality application for the Palm web0S.

The Palm Mojo SDK can be downloaded from the Palm Developer website which also provides ample resources to kickstart the developers. It has a section of examples so that developers can get an idea of what they can perform on web0S.

LG is taking the competition from Sony Ericsson and Samsung head on with more advanced mobile devices. Their latest warrior is a 12.1 megapixel camera phone called LG GC990 or Louvre. LG wants to reach the number 2 spot in the mobile space by 2012 and it has some exciting mobile phone launches in line to accomplish that. The current no.2 Sony Ericsson is known for better camera phones and it had announced the launch of a 12 megapixel camera phone called Sony Ericsson Satio. Samsung too has a 12 megapixel camera phone in its arsenal in Samsung Pixon.

The specs of the Louvre are at par with a high end phone. It has a 3.2-inch 16:9 touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, aGPS, DNLA, TV-out, Bluetooth, XviD and DivX playback. It has Schneider-Kreuznach lens to power its 12.1 megapixel camera. It has S class UI which provides the device an intuitive menu and overall a better usability. The price of the device will be known later but expect it to burn a hole in your pocket.

The LG Rumor 2 brings a few notable enhancements to the original Rumor, namely a new higher resolution display and redesigned slide out QWERTY Keyboard. It retains the candybar form factor with a slide-out QWERTY Keyboard, which offers a convenient choice of text input methods. The front of the phone is decked out in glossy black plastic, while the outer edge and back plate is a neon blue color that i quite like.

There are two user-changeable back plates included with the phone both blue but with different designs on them for masculine or feminine users.

Although the entire phone is cased in plastic and on the front of the phone, you will find the 2 inch display which has been updated to QVGA resolution.

Along the right edge of the display, you will find two silver softkeys, though these are only used when the QWERTY Keyboard is slide out. Below the display is the navigational cluster and the standard numeric keypad. The d-pad is surrounded by three buttons along either side. On the left, you have the left softkeys, voice commands and ‘talk’ button on the right, the right softkeys, the back button and the end button.

The Standard numeric keypad is below the navigational cluster and is also made up of individual ‘bubble’ buttons, which makes for a fantastic texting experience. Along the right edge of the phone is the 2.5mm audio port and the microSD card slot both protected by small doors to keep debris out. Along the left edge of the phone is the volume rocker and the dedicated camera button. The microUSB port on the bottom of the phone is used to charge the phone as well. The 1.3 megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone, right beside the loudspeaker.

Messaging on the LG Rumor2 is handled in the messaging menu with all types voicemail, SMS, MMS, Email and IM listed in their own separate inboxes. The email client is quite nice with support for multiple inboxes as well as a wizard that handles setup for a number of different web based email services including Gmail, Hotmail and even custom inboxes.

It supports Sprint Navigation for voice-guided turn by turn directions. Sprint family locator is also on board which allows you to easily keep track of where your family members are. This could be very useful at a large amusement park or outdoor shopping area as well as around town.

The LG Rumor2 is a nice compact messaging phone with both an easy to use numeric keypad and a comfortable QWERTY Keyboard. The dedicated number row and smiley button on the slide-out keyboard are definitely appreciated, and the email support - both for web-based and corporate Outlook Web Access, is well implemented and easy to setup.
