official CNN app for your iPhone is out and is available for download at the iTunes store. The CNN’s new app is definitely the most serious investment in mobile news industry. CNN’s iPhone app based on the iphone 3.0 SDK features is targeted to a reinvent news applications on the iPhone.

App also integrated huge library of video clips and live stream during the breaking news directly on the app, this has made CNN news brand closer to your fingertips.

A feature on this iPhone App lets users swipe through pictures and bullet points, looking for points of interest in the days popular headlines. The App costs you $1.99, there is advertising on the mobile content it is not ad free! As long as the advertising is not intrusive that should be bearable. Seems like there is more to come for blackberry & Android.

Apple release a Mobile iDisk iphone application recently. With the iDisk app, you can view supported files like documents, PDFs, even stream music and movies and remotely delete stuff from your iDisk. An annoying quirk, though, is that you have to dive into every folder individually to get it to refresh and show any new files. Document and PDF viewing work perfectly. With music and movies, the better the connection, the better the streaming experience, though don’t expect to stream your whole iTunes library over it, it’s a one song at a time kind of deal. And the movie file support is finicky, to say the least. But when it works, it’s pretty nice.

MobileMe iDisk is accessible from any web browser, Mac or PC, at me.com. With a familiar, intuitive interface, uploading and organizing files is as simple as drag and drop. And if you use a Mac, you can find iDisk right in the Mac OS X Finder.

You can already access your iDisk online at me.com. And now you can access it right from your iPhone or iPod touch. Free for MobileMe members, the iDisk app for iPhone and iPod touch makes your important files accessible anytime, anywhere. View popular file types, such as Microsoft Office and iWork ’09 documents and presentations, PDFs, and more, in portrait or landscape. Share any file, big or small, with just a few taps. And access files in the Public folders of other MobileMe members just as easily.

The good thing of the iphone application as a manager is that it makes it incredibly easy to share file go to the file you want to share, click the little wireless icon, and you can email a link to it with an expiration date you set. It also has a bookmark list of your friends’ public folders, you can quickly get back to them.

The team of Charlie Miller and his fellow cybersecurity researcher Collin Mulliner presented an iPhone vulnerability at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas which can allow anyone to take control of all the iPhones across the world. The duo has found a flaw in the way iPhone manages its text messages. The researchers have revealed that the weakness lies in the way the iPhone receives the text messages.

When a SMS is sent by the carrier to the phone then it receives the full message even if the phone is incapable of deciphering the whole text message. This is how the smartphones work. Miller claims that if a SMS is sent to the user’s phone which it doesn’t understand then it gets confused and handles that message differently which somehow makes the phone vulnerable to being remotely hijacked.

This will allow the hacker to literally take over your phone and all the activity that you might perform on your iPhone ranging from checking your bank account to your emails. The solutions according to the Miller and Mulliner lies with AT&T and Apple. AT&T can filter such SMS from ever reaching the iPhone users while Apple can quickly create a patch to stop this from ever happening.

Such SMS messages will appear as some garbled text or single square character. It is advised to quickly (like in seconds) shut down your iPhone and pray that the hacker doesn’t attack you again. There’s obviously not much that user can do (other than keep his phone shut) at his end as of now until AT&T and Apple do something very quick. The researcher duo have also claimed that such vulnerabilities are also present in Android and Windows Mobile but iPhone stole most of the attention.

Navigon, the leading innovator in the navigation market, announced the availability of a North American version of its on-board navigation software in the iPhone App Store. The MobileNavigator transforms any iPhone 3G, equipped with the new Apple OS 3.0 operating system, and any iPhone 3G S into a complete navigation device.

It looks like Navigon has made a serious effort to deliver a product that’s directly in line with its suite of dashboard navigation systems, and it’s brought across some of the look and feel of the device’s UI, 2-D and 3-D maps and the company’s Reality View and Lane Assistant features, which are designed to help you negotiate tricky interchanges. Unlike the iPhone’s in-built Google Maps feature, the app is also a one-off download, so it won’t go eating up any of your 3G data allowance while you’re out on the road. But that also means it’s a whopping 1.6GB in size, which is a seriously big chunk of the iPhone’s available memory–particularly if you’re an 8GB owner.

Navigon MobileNavigator, it features full GPS-navigation and map material and comes stored with a full active route planner for the UK and Ireland. It also brings some iPhone specific features: automatic switching from portrait to landscape view, direct navigation to an address from saved contacts, as well as multi-touch zoom. The application, together with maps for North America, costs $99.99, but it’s offered at a promotional price of $69.99 until August 15.

The stalker friendly Google Latitude has finally come to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The launch of Google Latitude was due on the iPhone while it had already been launched for Blackberry, Windows Mobile 5.0 and S60. For the uninitiated Google Latitude is a mobile service which lets its users to share their location via GPS installed handsets or through network geolocation.

Google Latitude on iPhone comes with all the standard features such as sharing your location and seeing where your Google Latitude friends are located. The strange thing about Google Latitude application for iPhone is that it is a web based app here unlike its version on Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Mobile.

The Google Mobile Blog states that they created this application by working closely with Apple and the decision to make it a web app was taken to “avoid any confusion with Maps on iPhone.” One of the main thing to note here is that Google is bypassing the iPhone Apps Store by making it a webapp. The company has onbviously stated that it doesn’t wanted to confuse its app with Maps on iPhone but it’s also possible that Apple could have shown his bigbrother tendencies. We can only speculate.

Since apps can not be run in background on an iPhone so its users will have to update their location by pointing their browser to google.com/latitude. This is not exactly what we’d have liked but something is better than nothing.

Apple iPhone has raised our expectations multiple times and we have started to expect it to perform every single task that we do on our desktops. Some people even unsuccessfully try to use their iPhone to do their jobs just like this guy did. The high expectations from smartphones is unreasonable and I think we are still far from those smartphones which can replace our desktops.

That being said it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t rely on our smartphones and particularly from iPhones once in a while to do some menial tasks such as create to-do list, manage your finances and pay your bills etc. Thanks to the huge repository of apps for iPhone you can certainly use the iPhone as one productivity tool if not your desktop. Here’s a list of some of the productivity apps for iPhone 3GS.

1. HiTask is an application you might like to use if you have to manage your team or project. HiTask is essentially a free web-based task management application which allows you to share tasks and projects with the team and assign tasks to team members. It also happens to have a to-lists feature which is although provided by many other apps but it makes better sense if it’s incorporated as a secondary feature rather than a primary app. It has a mobile as well as desktop version which have more advanced features such as drag-n-drop.

2. Torch Project Management is an amazing and highly recommended for someone who works in the line of work where you have to stay connected with colleagues, clients and suppliers. The beauty of Torch Project Management lies in the fact that you can attach Messages, E-mails, Files, Events, Tasks, Google Docs, Time Tracking, Bids and Invoices. Its latest version also supports Time and financial data visualization, support for Google Visualization API as a data source.

3. 1Password is one application you don’t wanna leave if you use your iPhone to browse scores of websites and blogs everyday. It works just like its parent version for Mac OSX and that is to spare you the trouble to remember all the passwords on various sites. If you have lose or forget your passwords often then I don’t need to say much about its effectiveness.

4. Easy Bill lets you do do invoicing from your iPhone. You can use this application to track and record charges, send invoices, add and edit contacts. Neat.

5. Groups: Drag & Drop Contacts Management brings to iPhone what Apple couldn’t provide. This applications lets you manage your contacts as easily as drag-n-drop. This is a crucial app if you like to keep your contacts list well managed.
