MSI is going to launch Wind, an ultralow-cost laptop that runs on Intel Corp.’s Atom microprocessor, this June in America. The U.S. edition of Wind will come in two different versions. One will cost $549 and run Windows XP. A few things set Wind apart from competitors, including the 1.6-GHz Atom microprocessor, a larger screen size and a six-cell battery that gives it around six hours of power, according to MSI.

Wind also carries an 80GB hard disk drive instead of a flash memory-based solid-state drive. The second type of Wind will have Novell Inc.’s SUSE Linux operating system and will be priced at $399. (more…)

The security and reliability of electronic voting systems continues to worry many election experts and security researchers. During the 2006 midterm elections, a combination of ballot problems and the lack, on e-voting machines, of an obvious warning for voters who failed to vote in a race led to massive undervoting in Sarasota County, Florida, and likely gave the election to Vern Buchanan, a Republican representative. According to Securityfocus.com today
The U.S. federal agency in charge of government technology standards approved on Thursday the accreditation of two laboratories to perform certification of election computers. (more…)

The copy protection seems to be ruined on the latest Blu-Ray and HD DVD technology has been broken, according to a code writer’s post at the Doom9 video enthusiast forums.
Someone on this forum has claimed to have written software, named BackupHDDVD, that bypasses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) protection found on the new storage formats and allows users to copy data from the otherwise restricted discs to a PC.
Maybe this news is still in its rough form and maybe it is just limited to a handful of HD DVD titles, the program appears to confirm early fears that AACS is too similar to CSS, the encryption scheme used by standard DVDs and famously bypassed by Jon Lech Johansen in 2002.
If validated, this could force a radical revision of copy protection on future discs.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates also finds it easier to “just buy a CD and rip it” than grapple with the copyright protection used by online music stores.
Gates confessed to a round table of prominent bloggers that “no one has done it right” when it comes to Digital Rights Management. This is despite Microsoft recently creating yet another DRM format for it’s new Zune MP3 player.
Gates went on to say Digital Rights Management “causes too much pain for legitimate buyers” trying to distinguish between legal and illegal uses. He declined to elaborate on how Microsoft would address this. (more…)
